Blue Monday Morning...Crossword and Coffee

It's the way he starts every day for the last 25 years.
I know this how?
That is how long ago we bought a set of four handmade pottery coffee cups.

It was our 25th Wedding Anniversary in December 1990.  We took a trip to Sante Fe, New Mexico to celebrate.  Who knew the coffee cup would last this long!  Actually, I did, and I'm sure I told him so.

My assurance that it was a good purchase began with "HiHoney, this cup is handmade to last."  High fire clay and glazes guarantee that to be so...providing it doesn't hit the floor.

Over the years there have been plenty of assurances for one thing or another, so when the 'I'm not bossy' sign was found it seemed more than appropriate.  However,  'I just know'...nothing...compared to his 25 year crossword vocabulary.

So what do crosswords and coffee have in common besides they are both morning habits?  There are plenty of words out there on the merits of crossword puzzles as being an important part of a healthy lifestyle and an activity to stave off neurodegenerative diseases.  On the other hand, there are skeptics who say crosswords may be just another 'Habit' with 'good and bad' prefixes attached according to one's experiences.
The same, I say, can be said about Coffee!
What say you, Sally?

  1. crossword puzzles are a very good habit - exercise the brain. Add the word "thundersleet" - that's been on our news channels this a.m. with an Ice Event. Glad he's using a pen with confidence on the puzzle. Happy Blue Monday

    1. Leave it to Texas Weather to come up with a new word...thundersleet. Very cold here this am, but so far no thunder and a bit of sleet. I'm glad you noticed the PEN...he is confident, but cautious...he's also a good Chess Player. Me...I keep the white out PEN handy.

  2. I think any mental exercise is a good habit! I use a pen on a crossword too, but not because I'm confident, but I don't like how faint pencil is. Lol

    1. It definitely is a good habit which I practice as well. Not that it takes a mental giant to type GOOGLE, but deciphering the "is this what you meant" list can sometimes require a head scratching! LLOL! Yeah, a pencil is faint and not the best confidence builder.

  3. I think a coffee cup should be special, it's a faithful morning companion. Routine can be comforting and a crossword puzzle in the morning sounds a perfect way to ease into the day. I always get a puzzle book, which includes crosswords, when I go on airplanes. I know quite a few Sudoku addicts.

I'm not participating in A-Z this year. It's wonderful you are a helper. I'm looking forward to reading not only your blog but also a random few hundred from the big list. It's great fun and you can meet such interesting and wonderful people :-)

    1. Yes, routines are comforting. Thanks for pointing that out. We take our morning rituals for granted after years of doing them and often overlook how important they are in as you say, 'easing into the day.' SUDOKU...omg...the only thing I understand about them is their name SU.

I will miss your beautiful beading and creative posts this year on AtoZ, but am happy you will be participating as a 'Reader'.

  4. Hi Sue,

My husband became addicted late in life (after he retired). He works crossword puzzles every day now. Thanks for playing today.

    Happy Blue Monday!

    1. I think that happens a lot and it's 'A Good Thing' for the brain after a nights rest. My pleasure to play Blue Monday!

  5. Hi Sue, You sure know how to use your words to convey a beautiful message and tribute to HiHoney! I love that cup, and I enjoy a crossword puzzle too! Hugs from Cold COlorado to you in Texas! Stay safe and warm.

    1. Thanks for reading between the lines Anne. HiHoney's crossword skills are worthy of a tribute...as is he just because. I would go with the crossword cup if it weren't for the 25 year old companion cup. He likes the way it feels and it's just simply part of his morning comfort ritual.

  6. I have the coffee habit, but not crossword puzzles. I tried them, but gave up for other type puzzles. I read a lot. One of my sisters was very good at crossword tho. Very good for your mind.

    1. You have set a good example for longevity with the good habit of reading and morning coffee, LV. I bet you and your sister started that good brain activity as youngsters. I didn't start drinking coffee until later in life, but have always been a reader and writer. Patterns and Quilting are my puzzles. I think those count, too.

  9. I need to get back to crossword puzzles. My parents used to do them and in their later years I'd pop in and fill in a few blanks to help out.
