For a Christmas fabric collector, collecting Christmas themed fabric is a given, and if you wait until the Christmas season to do so...you're too late. Yes, too late to start your Christmas Crafting. With the shopping season starting earlier and earlier, Artists/Crafters Shops like mine, have to start...like....Christmas in July!
Christmas fabrics are one of the few holiday themed fabrics you should NOT wait to go on clearance...they are picked over or totally gone. Throughout the year, I watch for them in Thrift Shops and Online Fabric Groups....good bargins found there. New lines of Christmas fabrics show up in Quilt Shops and Fabric Stores as early as July. Christmas in July is no joke.
Making the Origami Ornaments required a good bit of fabric cutting preparation, organizing pins, beads, rickrack, ribbon and other decorations.
Thankfully, most Hobby stores begin stocking Christmas stuff early...they are good at Christmas in July, too.
The trickiest shopping was for Styrofoam Balls. I learned to buy as many packages as I could as soon as they hit the shelves.

I approached the placement of the folded pieces, the color arrangements, and beading as I would for a quilt. It gave them a 'Quilted' look with each one being unique and one of a kind. I made them right up until days before Christmas Eve to keep them in my Shop...so yes, they were good sellers.
Collection of Christmas Crafts...includes Origami Balls and Quilted Blocks...Layered YoYo Ornaments and Vintage Quilt Angels. These are my original designs, but you can view the Origami Quilted Ornaments on U-Tube HERE and a Photo Tutorial HERE.

Good heavens! I've never seen Christmas origami done with fabric and made into baubles etc. It's certainly very novel and would take a LOT of patience and skill to pull them off well - not to mention an eye for colour co-ordination.

I can testify to the patience part. They do take that and time. After developing a step system, I could do 3 or 4 at a time...with breaks and chocolate.
DeleteThat is a LOT of work. I am in awe. So beautiful. What else can I say? Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThank you Alana. I had fun using up a lot of my stashed trims and fabrics. I liked the way they turned out, too. I plan to do them again for next Christmas. I'll start in July...LOL!
DeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE! You have the best eye for combining fabrics and finding a little detail to make a focal point like that church. My sister makes silk floral wreaths, and she will agree with you about when to shop for supplies. If someone calls with a last minute order for a Christmas wreath, it is almost too late because winter greenery is GONE - craft stores have Valentine and Easter stuff on the shelves.
ReplyDeleteThanks Wendy. After awhile of focusing on the details it comes easier. I also look for ideas in other places besides my 'OverDoneBrain'. I haven't tried silk floral anything...hmmm, maybe I should...nope...enough!
Deleteyour Christmas crafts are the best! C = crazy crafty cool
ReplyDeleteThanks Joanne. C=crazy crafty cool and conked!
DeleteI love your Christmas crafts! How fun is that?

Thanks Morgan...they are pretty fun to make!
DeleteThose baubles are amazing, beautiful designs. I always buy Christmas themed material early in the year and send to my quilting mother in Australia. We have lots of Quilted Christmas decorations that we bring out each year - love them.

Thanks Pamela. I bet your mother looks forward to her early Christmas from you. I love decorating my tree with quilted stuff, too.
DeleteI love these ornaments. I have a similar one, made by a friend when we lived in Ecuador. I look forward to getting it out each year. (She wasn't Ecuadorian, just another expat friend).

I know you must treasure your ornament from Ecuador. Special when they are made by friends. Lots of Christmas memories tied up in them.
DeleteHi Sue - you've got lots and I can see you'd need to get in early ... great fun to see them though - cheers Hilary
ReplyDeleteYes, starting early is the key to getting lots of them made. What I don't sell, I give as gifts.
DeleteThese ornaments are absolutely stunning! My grandmother and I have always made a habit of completing the bulk of our Christmas shopping by August, if not July. :)
ReplyDeleteThank-you. I've sent you an email to try and return your visit.
DeleteI was literally swimming in Christmas-themed fabric, yards upon yards. I destashed and kept only small amounts should I ever make one of those Christmas tree wall hangings. I'd like to pin my Christmas pins on it.
