I am a 'Prompt Me' writer and photographer.
Give me a prompt and it's off to the writing races or photo shoot!
For AtoZ 2019, Word Prompts come first from 'Family Word Finder' ... a thesaurus of synonyms and antonyms in alphabetical order. I take the first word and the last word of each letter and match it to a photograph from my collection/files. Some invoke words in a story and others invoke that age old adage "A picture is worth a thousand words."
It's amazing how a three letter word like Eye can have so many uses and involve a plethora of concepts and complicated definitions. Let's start with these easily associated words...eyeball, pupil, iris, peepers, sight, and vision. How about these conceptual words...gaze, view, scan, observe, study, inspect, stare etc. etc.
Then there are implications for complications like words for Eye doctors, Eye glasses makers and sellers. For example, an ophthalmologist is a doctor who specializes in diseases of the eye. An optometrist is a specialist who measures visual accuracy and orders and fits lenses for eye glasses.
I don't know about you, but I always get far and near sightedness mixed up. It still wasn't all that clear after my first appointment to the Eye Doctor/ Optometrist...
"I swear, Mother, the whole chart was blurry. I could barely see the 'Big E'. The school nurse could not believe how bad my eyes were. Here's the notice that you have to take me to a real eye doctor."
Boy, I really wanted to wear glasses. Lots of my friends were wearing them, and well, they just looked so cool.
It wasn't that I needed them to see 'far off'...like I told the eye doctor, I'm farsighted, I can spot an eagle a mile away." He raised one eyebrow and winked at my Mother which made her feel better about thinking I couldn't see my hand in front of my face.
Surely she didn't know that 'far off' was actually called nearsighted or if you were the eye doctor...myopia. So, on that first visit to the 'real eye doctor' where I proved my eagle eye far off vision was better than 20/20 by reading his Big E which from across the hall was clear as a bell. However, my Mother's feeling of relief at being a remiss parent was short lived. The 'real eye doctor' confirmed I could not see my hand in front of my face.
There are many synonyms for the word Eager, and as I looked over the list, many of them described a Family Camping Trip to Ballinger Lake. Besides being raring to go, keen on trying out new fishing gear, and intent on catching a big fish, there was the yearning for the special time spent with family.
Adverse is an antonym of eager.
I think that about describes touching the 'Big Fish' she caught!

E my favorite letter as an Egan. I have had site issues and visited a Retina specialist which took eye-care to whole new level. Love your love for words, great blog.
ReplyDeleteEYE love this post. The picture of the young lady eyeing that fish is priceless. I'm with her - not eager to touch it. And your photos look like mine - oh the choice of really blah black glasses back in the day.
ReplyDeleteGotta tell you - since having my cataract surgery back in Nov and astigmatism fixed - I can SEE.
Two good responses for E. I just had to do an eye test to renew my drivers license. I did better without my glasses! Go figure.
