SunBonnet Sue has been around since the early 1900's and has maintained her popularity among Sewists and Quilters right up until....well....right now. She has been around the blocks, so to speak, with quilters since the 1930's when her bonnets and dresses were made from feedsack fabrics and appliqued to a muslin background. The Buttonhole Stitch was made popular at the same time when Sue's feedsack dress and bonnet was outlined in black embroidery floss.
Pieces from SunBonnet Sue's past are highly collectible among Quilters and Gals named Sue...like ME. Ever since I first learned about SunBonnet Sue, I've collected any and everything that remotely related to her from coffee cups to quilts. I've rescued Sue from dumpsters...Sue To The Rescue post...found her in attics and antique shops, and swapped/bartered/borrowed all kinds of sewing stuff for her. So you can imagine my surprise and delight when I opened an 'Old Sewing Box' bought at a Thrift Shop and found this SunBonnet Sue Needle Case/Keeper.
There is a bit of a debate as to what is the official name for a Needle Keeper.
Collectors call it a Case.
Knitters call it a Roll.
NeatNics call it an Organizer.
Crossword Puzzlers call it an Etui.
Me? I call this SunBonnet Sue a Real KEEPER!!

Hey, Sue, I looked at your knitting blog and I was impressed with your projects. Did you finish your lace sampler scarf, and are you still doing the Wednesday sweater group?
ReplyDeleteSunbonnet Sue is such a cutie. I recently completed a Sunbonnet Sue mini quilt with machine embroidery for a friend. Even the embroidery design companies have joined the Sunbonnet Sue parade.

I have three or four Sun Bonnet Sue quilts. Each a different color. I treasure them. You have a great collection of her items and they are definitely keepers.
