Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.
Did Ya'll take typing in High School? Wasn't it such a fun and stressful class? Fun in that it was something I really wanted to learn and stressful in that I was soooooo competitive, and if you put a timer on me, I was and still am a 'SpeedFreak'! And even more stressful when Mrs. Walker...typing teacher...started slashing that red pen through the mistakes. I tried to ignore that big sign at the front of the room that said
First ACCURACY Then SPEED!
I practiced Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country a Kabillion Times without giving much thought to the deeper meaning, understanding and implications of this well known and used Phrase.
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the Party.
This was the original phrase written and proposed as a typing drill by a teacher named Charles E. Weller. Typing books in 1965...when I took Typing I...and now... use the variant "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country" because it exactly fills out a 70-space line if you put a period at the end.
I was in Mrs. Walker's Typing I class my Senior year at Monahans High School in 1965, and last week I visited MHS for the VERY LAST TIME!
It is being DEMOLISHED to make room for a Parking Lot that fronts the New MHS!
As I roamed the halls and classrooms of MHS I was pleased to see that the Art Students had left their 2010 Patriotic Statement for me to Photograph.
Wonder who left this message in the Typing Room?
Oops! There's a Typo!
I kan still tipe really FAST!
I remember typing that very same thing. Over and over. I'm always so thankful I took typing - I don't think they even teach it nowadays, do they? It served me well in various office jobs and temp jobs. I never was the fastest, but I did okay. My favorite sound when I was temping was the rat-tat-tat of the IBM Selectric typewriter.
ReplyDeleteMust be sad to see your old high school demolished!
xo

OOh, the IBM Selectric was soooo awesome. I, however, never picked up speed and accuracy. Just speed, and that wasn't until the computer keyboard came around and the Selectric was kicked to the curb.

My Typing teacher was Mrs. DeSpain at Greensburg High School 1964-65. I loved that lady. Over the years I have been thankful that I took two typing classes. Never worked in the business area but teachers sure do use their typing skills. Then when I went into administration, I didn't need a secretary to type for me. I could do it myself (and rather quickly I might add). Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteI got a C in typing! My teacher, the football coach and our next door neighbor, probably wondered why I lacked that competitive edge!
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a speed freak at typing. Better now than I was back when. lol! Everyone was so competitive and prizes were given out for the fastest and most accurate. I had the pleasure of winning it just once. :(
ReplyDeleteWish I could go back to my old school and look around, but it is 4,000 miles away
My downfall was shorthand...
I do miss Texas...we had such a good stay last winter!

I remember typing class! It was fun! My husband's HS was torn down seveal years ago and I swear he is still traumatized! I am glad you had one last visit! Oh the memories!
ReplyDeleteHugs,

LOL, my Bill and I were just talking about our old manual typewriter and here your entry is. I typed the same thing, not party but country...I know where that manual is and plan to see if it's still working today. Something for my grandson to fiddle with while the rains fall. Class of 68...no wonder we think so much alike.
ReplyDeleteHave a Memorable Day
Memory is another thing of the past lately,...meant to tell you that our HS got torn down section by section, only leaving some of its fine bones to rebuild into an apartment building. So sad to see it go. I loved graduating from one level to another to finally pass the bust of Lincoln, to the top floor. It truly IS a sad thing to see it go. Those halls have many fond memories.
ReplyDeleteAww.. I hate to hear when an old building has to come down. You know me, Sue!.. sentimental, HATE to throw things out, often very reluctant of change!.. As for typing?.. Yes, I took it, and was terrible at it! Well, I mean I passed the class, but I had all I could do to reach that required 60 wpm with only 3 mistakes or less! I remember my typing teacher always saying, "I worry about you!" I'm still not exactly SURE what she meant by that though! (0; Hope you're enjoying this beautiful first (official) week of Summer! Mohawk Stuntman certainly looks like he's having lots of fun on that new bike of his! Happy Birthday to him! ~tina
ReplyDeleteHey Stranger. Yes, I remember typing that line over and over. I also used to work in a department store that sold typwriters and every time you put a piece of paper in the one on display, somewhere on the sheet that we typed. Have a GREAT week and stay cool.

Yes, this girl remembers typing class and the exercise above. Too bad more kids don't learn to type rather than using the hunt and peck method. LOL
ReplyDeleteI wish I'd kept my firt type writer a, Corona and my IBM Selectric. Funny how one doesn't think about things like this at the time.
Great rooster and great post as always! ~ Sarah
Oh, I wish I had taken typing! I am could use a little speed! It's really so sad that the building is being torn down...hate it when that happens! I think old buildings have so much character and if those walls could talk, aww!!
ReplyDeleteNancy
I just loved this post, every bit of it. I too remember the Now is the time for all good men... I type much faster now on computer keyboard but remember that I typed 75wpm in typing class on a royal typewriter! I still love to type. The artwork featured on your site is just great and I love the hairdo - LOL! hugs, Kerrie
