No Blowin or Sewin on OldHankies...PinkSaturday#5

I Am A Hankie Collector!I Am A Hankie Collector!
I Am A Hankie Collector!
There, I've said it.
What a Relief!
Even if it is an
Obssesive Compulsive Behavior!
Now If I could only make myself
Do Something With Them!

I do have a plan for the 200+ Hankies. For years I've planned to make a quilt like the one pictured in Grandmother's Favorite Quilts by Sandra L. Hatch. The butterfly pattern calls for only 20 of my Prize Hankies folded in half cross ways. I could do that, but which 20, and I hate to fold them and only see half of the hankie. So Scratch that...for now.

Instead of using 20 hankies, I decided I could part with five hankies. They had a few spots and a couple of holes, and it was eaiser to cut and fold them.
I'm sure the former owners did not blow on these too pretty to blow on hankies.

This is ONE block in a VeryVictorian wall quilt I made back in the 1990's.  I'll show you the rest at a later date.
The layered hankies line up next to a row of paper pieced Miniature Spools.

The right row with the pink background features a favorite hankie with 'Mother' embroidered in the corner and surrounded with vintage crocheted and tatted lace....another OCB Collection.

Whew! I'm feeling better with every passing minute and confession.

And now for a 'Pink Hankie Show' and a few Pink Vintage Vases!
There, that's Three OCB Collection Confessions!

There is no way I could cut, fold, sew or quilt on this exquisite Round Rose Hanky! Could You?
So, in my search for
'How To Use Hankies',
I found NanaLuLu's Linen Closet .

There are some wonderful ideas for Vintage Hankies,
and I'm thinking the Round Rose will have to be Framed!

Thanks to Pink Saturday Hostess, Beverly at How Sweet The Sound.

My 'New Blog Shout Out' for this week is Barbara at Purple Goat Lady.
This past week she has featured some amazing Fall TableScape Collections.

And As Always...Thanks for Coming and Commenting!

  3. I don't collect hankies, but I've been known to pick some up when I see them at antique markets or shops. I use them in bread baskets, as cocktail napkins, and to pop in my handbag if I'm going out at night. Who wants to use tissue when you can have a soft hankie? I like the sentiment that goes along with these little vintage pieces as well because I have a box of them that belonged to my grandmother and mother. Thanks for sharing your obsession. Love the quilt and the round hankie.

  4. Oh my gosh, Sue, I am in LOVE with that Victorian hankie wall hanging!! The spools are so wonderful, too. I love old hankies and like you, I have never been too sure what to do with them. I like the idea of framing them. Thanks for sharing your pretty pinks and blessings to you! Vicki

  6. HAPPY PINK SATURDAY!
Well, I can now confess, too. I have bags of hankies...yes bags of them and if I see a pretty one I can not resist it.
I have the book on making hanky quilts, but have yet to try it...they are more like wall hangings than quilts...
    Sweet Blessings,
    Jil

  8. Sue,
Your featured hankies are scrumptious! I have so many ideas of what to do with my hankies as well, but like you, can't get over the hump of cutting into any of the prized ones...

And by the way, there is NO CURE for collector's disease. I've been told the best thing to do is just accept it. Smile.

    Great post!

  9. Sue, you always make me smile. And, I know your soul must be feeling lighter with all of these confessions. ;-)

I love your hankies. I only have a few, but each belonged to a special person in my life. I really like the idea of framing.

Happy Pink Saturday. And, thank you for introducing everyone to Barbara. She is great, and I could have used her method of dealing with computers.

I love all those ideas, especially the window valance. Remember how our Mother and Grandmother used to send hankies to each other on their birthdays. I want to see all of your hankies when I come to visit.

p.s. I'm going to crochet my next shaw...with your help. Had to get mine out yesterday at work, and it kept me sooo...warm. You know that is one of my most favorite gifts you ever made me!

  11. I have some old hankies of my mothers. I could not use them in anyway. However, your idea of making a quilt of them is an excellent one. Sounds like you have enough do so.

  12. love love love the hankies!!! I have crocheted the edges of many a hanky and you're right... I hate to use them (so I usually just carry them for show)
The round rose hankie would look great framed... you could always frame it as a tray (like I did with my pink roses)
    Happy Pink Saturday!

  13. I don't know of anyone who doesn't love old hankies. They were made with such beautiful colors and patterns. You don't find that anymore which is a shame. I look forward to seeing all the great ideas you come up with and what you do with all these lovelies. Happy Pink Saturday, Char

I have a friend who made a gorgeous quilt out of vintage hankies. I love the butterfly pattern of this hankie quilt!!

I went to a garage sale this summer and bought a box of hankies - probably at least 30-50! It was so fun going through that box!

what fun to see some of your prized hankie collection. I do cut on the old hankies. I use them on my vintage pillowcase dresses sometimes to make pockets and flowers but I only use ones that have a hole in them. Have you ever seen a bed dust ruffle made with vintage hankies? It's gorgeous. And I once bought and resold a wreath made using old hankies. HPS ~ Lynn

Sorry, I didn't get to see everyone yesterday. I had important business. My 11 year-old grandson was playing football and he wanted Mimi to go to the out-of-town-last-of-the-season-game. THEY WON AGAINST AN UNDEFEATED TEAM! WOO-HOO! 35 - 17☺

Hope the coming week blesses you with sunshine, happiness and good friends.

  36. So pretty! Hankies are lovely and ladylike. I have my mother-in-law's collection and now I think I should round them up and figure out what to do with them. I wish you could come to Denver and do the antique district with me. I'd love to see what you'd find. I always look at furniture, dishes, and then get hungry for pizza. Isn't this the last week before the big DO? Will you be relieved when it's over? Sad? Thanks for being so Sue-ish! lovelove!
